A hydraulic drive system is a drive or transmission system that uses pressurized hydraulic fluid to power hydraulic machinery. The term hydrostatic refers to the transfer of energy from flow and pressure, not from the kinetic energy of the flow.

The hydraulic fluid can be any fluid as oil or water, in specific cases can be used air or other inert gas, this case is setting up a pneumatic drive system and is necessary a compressor because gases in ambient pressure has low potential to transmission energy.

This experiment has used water as fluid and its purpose is simulate a brake, not considering energetic efficiency, but only operation.

When larger piston is pressed a kinetic energy is transfer through fluid moving smaller piston, its is connect a yellow lever to lock wheel, as soon as larger piston is released a set springs return levers to starting position, restarting moviment.

Except hydraulic parts, all experiment was make with LEGO Technic, detail:

  • Motor speed 380 RPM and torque 40 mNm (300 mA)
  • Gears
    Big 24 tooth / Small 8 tooth
    Relation gears are 24:8 = 3:1

Note
It wasn’t considered the relation force between syringes size, was used a small syringe only to easily fixation in structure.
